Pilot S20 Mechanical Pencil, 0.5 mm - Deep Red

The Pilot S20 is a drafting pencil that quietly breaks most of the rules of the category. Where typical drafting pencils lean into industrial design — knurled metal grips, aggressive tips, utilitarian finishes — the S20 takes a warmer approach entirely. Its barrel is wrapped in wood enriched in resin, polished to a smooth, almost silky finish that feels immediately different in the hand from any metal or plastic pencil. It is the kind of object that makes you want to pick it up.

The wood body sits over a metallic inner core, which pulls the centre of gravity low and gives the pencil a dense, stable feel despite its light overall weight of 18 g. The slim, gently tapered profile narrows subtly toward the grip area — just enough to settle naturally between the fingers without any additional texture needed. The fixed metal sleeve at the tip positions the lead precisely and works cleanly along a ruler edge. Lead is advanced by pressing the top knock, and a rotating lead hardness indicator on the end cap lets you mark the current grade — it covers the range from 2B to 2H. A small capped eraser is built into the top, with the lead size labelled on the cap. The clip is slim and removable.
