The Mitsubishi uni 9800 is a pencil with a long-standing reputation as Japan's go-to general writing pencil — used in schools, offices, and animation studios with equal comfort for decades. The matured micro graphite lead is smooth and dense, producing a dark, rich mark that writes more softly than comparable grades from other manufacturers — a quality that is most immediately apparent at the softer end of the range. The deep forest green lacquer barrel with gold foil grade stamping is one of the most immediately recognisable pencil designs in the Japanese market, and one that has barely changed since the pencil's introduction.

The 2B is the softest grade in the 9800 range, and the one that suits expressive, fluid work most naturally — sketching, shading, loose note-taking, and journaling where a dark, effortless line is more valuable than precision. The lead lays down a rich, velvety stroke with minimal pressure, and the wider graphite core at this grade gives it a satisfying weight on the page.
