Pentel Ain Mechanical Pencil Leads, HB – 0.4 mm

The Pentel Ain is the lead that serious mechanical pencil users tend to land on and stay with. The Super Hi-Polymer formula balances six attributes that normally trade off against each other — smoothness, darkness, break resistance, smudge resistance, erasability, and longevity — without meaningfully compromising any of them. The result is a lead that writes darker and more smoothly than most leads at the same grade, holds up under firm pressure, and erases cleanly without ghosting.

The 0.4 mm diameter sits in a useful middle ground — finer than the widely available 0.5 mm for more precise, detailed work, while being noticeably more forgiving on breakage than the 0.3 mm. It is the natural refill choice for the Pentel GraphGear 1000 and GraphGear 500 in 0.4 mm, as well as any other mechanical pencil in that diameter. The leads come in Pentel's distinctive slide-to-open case — pull the front panel down with the thumb and swing it out to access the leads, which protrude slightly from the top for easy single-lead retrieval. Each tube contains 30 leads at 60 mm length. Available in HB and 2B.
